New York State Assistance Programs

Unfortunately, not everyone is going to end up being rich by the end of the year. That part’s okay; what’s discomforting is that some are going to suffer needlessly. What could come up that you need to figure out how to deal with it? Enough money for food? Enough money for clothes? Enough money to have a place to live? Kind of scary, isn’t it?

Unfortunately, we can’t offer help for people outside of New York state; maybe you’ll have access to some of what we have in New York state. If it helps, read this article first, then check to see if your state offers some kind of assistance that mirrors what we have here.

Let’s start with the New York State Department of Social Services. Some of the services it offers came about during the administration of President Obama, who was able to pass the Affordable Care Act. If you’re unsure what to do, the first step is to call them; if you’re outside of central New York, call 1-833-364-4695; if you’re in this area, call 315-477-8165. It can take anywhere from a few minutes to more than 30 minutes to get someone to talk to; your best chance to move things along is to call when the offices open at 8AM.

Once you get to talk to someone, tell them what your issues are. They’re very well trained and will help you reach the people who’ll help you. If you live in Onondaga County, it’s possible they’ll request that you come in person if you live close enough, at the John H. Mulroy Civic Center at 411 Montgomery Street. They’ll tell you what to bring with you, go through an initial quick screening, then have you sit in a waiting area for someone to call you. If you live in other counties throughout the state, you’ll probably know where to go and can find those phone numbers online.

Once you get home, depending on when in the month you talked to someone, it could take between 2 to 4 weeks before you can talk to someone on the phone who’ll help you get started. You might qualify for NYS Department of Health and the Department of Labor. The first one will have you answering a number of questions to see if you financially qualify for some kind of health insurance coverage. The second one will determine whether you can find a job that fits their employment listings based on your skill set.

There’s good things that can happen for you, and unfortunately one bad thing. The good things is that you’ll get quantifiable assistance; money, health care, and possibly employment. The bad thing is that the current national administration is trying to eliminate most, if not all, of these types of services.

If you live in states like California and New York, some of these services will be safe for their citizens; in other states, some of these services might have already been taken away; if not, trouble might be coming. The best everyone can do is look up the names of these departments in your community, make the phone call, and hope for the best.

You might not get everything you’re hoping for, but you’ll always have a chance to help your life better until you can land something you can live on. These departments will help take a load off of your mind so you can find a way to live your life better.
